Special Classes

Focus & Content

Each year we offer a variety of SPECIAL CLASSES including Advanced Obedience Topics, Tracking, and Special Training Techniques (Clicker classes, etc.) The exact classes vary from year to year depending on student interest and instructor availability. The list includes classes which help students prepare for competition in AKC Obedience competition, as well as other topics of interest:

 

Schedule:

Competition Ready --for people and dogs planning on showing at any level--

Thursday night at 6:30 PM, starting on Sept 9th,
taught by Connie Fields

The class will be taught by Marsha Tufft and is for 7 weeks.

Class Descriptions:

Scent Article

Focus & Content:

Topics will include:

Scent articles - scent discrimination
Dumbbell retrieve (take it, hold, drop) taught using clicker techniques
Both topics will be covered. You can work your dog on one or both topics - your preference.

Requirements:

For clicker retrieve:

a dumbbell that fits
a clicker, lots of yummy tiny treats and a hungry dog

For scent articles:

something to use for scent articles (need 5 articles of identical type that your dog can pick up, including one set of metal articles).
food that your dog likes and that will stick to your scent articles (cheese wiz, peanut butter, Braunschweiger sausage, etc.)

Basic Retrieve

Focus & Content:

Dumbbell retrieve (take it, hold, drop)
Retrieve over high jump

Requirements:

Dog should have a good sit stay and recall.

Equipment: a dumbbell that fits (make arrangements ~ 4 weeks before class starts to get one ordered).

 

Directed Retrieve

Focus & Content:

Directed Retrieve
Go-Out's
Signals
Pivots
The focus of this class is on the AKC Utility routine.

Requirements:

Reliable retrieve, including a correction. Your dog must be distraction trained, i.e. if you place a dumbbell and a cookie on the floor, your dog leaves the cookie alone and retrieves the dumbbell.

At least 12 gloves - any size.

 

Open

Focus & Content:

Drop on recall
Retrieve over high jump
Long sit (out of sight)
Long down (out of sight)

Requirements:

Solid sit and down stays
Knows heel position
Off-lead recall from a distracted start
Reliable Dumbbell Retrieve & a dumbbell that fits

Directed Jumping

Focus & Content:

High jump
Bar jump
Directed jumping
Moving stand
Go-outs will NOT be covered.

Requirements:

Reliable sit stay and recall
Reasonable control of dog off-lead
Go-outs are NOT required
Long-line (preferred) or flexi-lead
Jumps or access to jumps for practice

Competition Ready

Focus & Content:

All aspects of preparing to show
in AKC Novice class

Requirements:

Solid sit and
down stays
Knows heel position

Competition Ready (Novice level) - Thursday, 3/1 - 4/26 - 7:30 p.m.
